Onneyu Onsen & Sauna: Enjoy a Wonderful Stay at Oe Honke

Natural Hot Springs & Sauna
at Oe Honke
Fresh hot-spring water, open-air baths surrounded by Hokkaido's nature, and a tradition dating back to 1899.
After a day exploring eastern Hokkaido, discover the pleasure of slowing down in a natural Japanese hot spring. At Oe Honke, the quality of the water and a warm welcome are at the heart of your stay.
The Heart of Oe Honke:
100% Natural Hot-Spring Water
In Japan, gensen kakenagashi (源泉かけ流し) refers to natural hot-spring water continuously supplied to the baths.
At Oe Honke, our hot-spring water is used without added heating, dilution, filtration or recirculation. Fresh water continues to flow into the bathing pools. It is the water itself, rather than an elaborate bathing ritual, that makes this experience special.
What Makes the Water Special?
| Spring type | Alkaline simple sulfur hot spring |
|---|---|
| pH | 8.8 (alkaline) |
| Source temperature | 53.7°C / 128.7°F |
| Bathing system | 100% natural, free-flowing water |
The temperature measured at the source is not the temperature of every bathing pool. Actual bath temperatures vary with bathing conditions and the season.
The hot spring is affectionately called Bihaku no Yu, a name associated with the traditional appeal of these waters.
Part of Onneyu Onsen's Story
Since 1899
Oe Honke's history is closely connected with the early development of Onneyu Onsen.
In 1899, when the area was still remote and difficult to reach, the founder of Oe Honke obtained permission to use hot-spring water on the left bank of the Muka River. This marked the beginning of the hotel.
In those early years, travel to the region was not easy and visitors were few. As transportation improved and the town developed, Onneyu Onsen gradually became a destination known for its natural hot springs.
Oe Honke grew alongside the community. Over the generations, buildings and facilities have changed, but natural hot-spring bathing has remained central to the hotel's identity.
Our tradition is not simply about how long the hotel has existed.
It is about continuing to care for the hot springs and welcoming today's travelers to enjoy them.
Caring for Natural Hot-Spring Water Today
Natural spring water responds to its environment. The depth and size of each bath, outdoor temperature, weather and season can all affect bathing conditions.
At Oe Honke, a staff member certified by Japan's Onsen Sommelier Association helps monitor and adjust bathing temperatures so guests can enjoy the naturally flowing water comfortably.
This attention to the water is one way the hotel's longstanding hot-spring tradition continues today.
Experience Hokkaido's Four Seasons from an Open-Air Bath
Oe Honke's open-air baths, or rotenburo (露天風呂), are set beside the Muka River. Surrounded by natural stone, the baths offer views of the changing landscape and an opportunity to enjoy Hokkaido's fresh outdoor air.
Fresh greenery and the arrival of warmer days.
A chance to relax after exploring the countryside.
Changing colors across the surrounding hills.
Warm spring water against the cold Hokkaido air.
The indoor bathing area also includes different types of baths, such as a reclining bath and a whirlpool bath. Choose a comfortable bathing temperature and enjoy the experience at your own pace.
A Modern Löyly Sauna in Onneyu Onsen
Alongside a Traditional Hot Spring
Alongside its longstanding hot-spring tradition, Oe Honke has continued to improve the guest experience. The sauna facilities were renewed by 2024.
The sauna features a METOS "iki" heater and an automatic löyly system. At approximately 20-minute intervals, water is released onto the heated stones to produce warm steam.
| Sauna temperature | Approximately 85°C / 185°F |
|---|---|
| Automatic löyly | Every 20 minutes |
| Cold-water bath | Approximately 16–18°C / 61–64°F, depending on the season |
| Resting spaces | Indoor seating and outdoor resting area |
| Drinking water | Available near the sauna |
Enjoy the Sauna at Your Own Pace
Spend a comfortable amount of time in the sauna. After leaving, rinse away sweat before using the cold-water bath, or choose a shower instead. Take a break and enjoy the outdoor air.
There is no need to follow a fixed routine. Listen to your body, rest when needed, and drink plenty of water.

Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Onsen Visit
Japanese hot springs have a few simple customs that help everyone enjoy the baths comfortably. If this is your first time, a little preparation is all you need.
- Wash before entering the bath. Use the shower and washing area, and rinse thoroughly before getting into the water.
- Traditional communal bathing is without swimwear. Oe Honke has separate shared bathing areas for men and women.
- Keep towels and hair out of the bathwater. Tie up long hair and leave your bathing towel outside the pool.
- Respect other guests' privacy. Do not take photographs or use your phone in the changing or bathing areas.
- Walk carefully. Mineral-rich hot-spring water may make some surfaces slippery.
About tattoos: Bathing policies differ between Japanese facilities. Please contact Oe Honke in advance to confirm the hotel's current policy.
